In this article, Best Running Belts for Women, I provide information on three belts to help you make a decision. I have a running belt and it’s made a huge difference for me.

There are a variety of benefits that belts provide to runners. One main benefit is how a running belt frees up your hands making it safer for you.  If you were to trip, you have both hands to catch you. Your phone won’t go flying and keys won’t end up jabbing you.  

Also, they can hold your most important items such as mobile phones, wallet and other essentials.  This running belt will encourage you to bring along your phone which is vital in case of emergencies. You’ll no longer need to take your key and place through the laces of your shoe, or shove your phone in your Sports Bra. Uggh- super uncomfortable! Even placing your phone in a side pocket on your leggings can be uncomfortable. At least for me because I can feel the phone weighing them down.

A running belt will also give you the ability to bring water. Water pouches will keep your run from being cut short due to dehydration. For me, this is the biggest benefit to wearing a belt.  There is nothing worse than getting really thirsty on a run and not being able to drink any water.

Running Belt vs. Fanny Pack

A running belt has a sleeker design that traditional fanny packs or “bum bags” and are equipped with various pockets, sleeves and water bottle holders.  They are designed to fit snugly around the waist vs. a fanny pack that hangs down on the butt.  They can be seen as more modern and sophisticated than a fanny pack. 

The more fashion conscience don’t want to be seen wearing a fanny pack.  Bum bags are designed differently and are not as conducive to runners. People that have fanny packs can use them for hiking, walking or even for attending events such as a State Fair.  These bags are larger in general, have bigger pockets and are heavier than a running belt.  It is highly unlikely that you’ll ever see serious runners (training for marathons, etc) that wear a fanny pack while training.

What to Look For in Running Belts

The first step is to identify what is important to you to take on a run. What will keep you most comfortable and on the trail longer?  If the majority of your runs are shorter distance you may only need a belt big enough to hold your house key and phone. 

If you run long distance- than you will probably need to look for a running belt that has more room for food and fluids. There are some belts that come with pouches and attachments that can be removed. This allows for adjusting your set up depending on the length of the run.

Once you’ve narrowed down your capacity needs, consider adjustability. The belt should have a snug fit and have limited jostling while running.  The material needs to have enough cushion that won’t chafe your skin and be made of breathable material so you don’t end up with a sweat ring around your mid-section. Consider extra touches like a port for earbuds if you enjoy music.

Finally, think about how you being left or right handed will work with the belt. Depending on the orientation of the pockets and sleeves, this could be a minor inconvenience if you can’t grab the item with the hand that is most natural.

Stability: The belt is designed to minimize bounce. The bouncing on a belt can be super annoying!

Versatility: It’s versatile enough to use for various outdoor activities beyond running, such as hiking, cycling, or even traveling.

However, if you require to bring water with you on runs, then you will need a bulkier, heavier running belt.
